If I remember correctly, the Imperial Guard forces that managed to take shelter rallied after the planet broke and retook the pieces from Chaos. Local Imperial Navy forces also rallied, retrieved the guys, and they went around re-taking several worlds and systems in the Cadian Gate. So, not only did the planet break before the Guard, the Guard flat-out didn't break and re-took a shattered planet and then went around kicking the crap out of the same forces that had broken their planet.
